I’m a Tech-savvy Know-it-all Lawyer and I Fell for the Online Birkenstock Scam
I’m a seasoned retired lawyer who also enjoys technology. In the early days of the internet, I assembled my computers from scratch. In my ill-fated youth, I created websites, owned numerous domains, and even took part in some low-level criminal activities in sketchy internet communities where you could find pirated software and music.
Every time someone copies my Facebook (or Medium) page in an attempt to gain access to my followers, I don’t post on Facebook that “I’ve been hacked.”
I am aware of scams. I’ve warned both my older and younger friends to stay away from them, and I’ve also been known to lecture my wife indignantly about internet predators while she looks for the newest wrinkle cream.
In other words, I was conceited about safe internet usage. But Ms. Karma recently threw me out of my pulpit in a particularly vile manner. She discovered my character flaws — we’re talking about avarice, pride, and laziness — and allowed con artists to use them against me.
Let me share my sad story with you.
It started with Birkenstocks.
Before the start of the summer of 2023, I had never owned a pair of Birkenstocks. I had become tired of wearing my Crocs and learned that Birkenstock was a reputable manufacturer of rubber sandals. I placed an online order for a pair. I spent $50 on the Birkenstock rubber sandals, which quickly became my favorite slip-ons for the summer.
My experience with the rubber Birkenstock sandals encouraged me to try the more expensive models, but after a quick web search, I realized that the higher-end models were more expensive than I wanted to pay for a pair of sandals.
the conclusion? I wish.
Then Facebook
I’m spending time on Facebook when I see an advertisement for Birkenstocks that are on sale. For a limited time, sandals that normally cost $125 were offered at a price of $30 for each pair. It is called my name and is a fantastic offer.
I made a number of extremely stupid thinking mistakes after seeing the advertisement, flattering them by classifying them in the same category as thinking.
