From robotic dogs that mimic your actual pet’s behavior to smart forks that regulate your eating speed, technology has seeped into every aspect of our lives.
Nowadays, it’s rare to see somebody without a smartphone in their pocket due to nomophobia, or the fear of being without your smartphone.
Although there is no denying that technology has improved our lives in countless ways, we risk losing out if we ignore any potential negative effects.
I want to discuss how our excessive reliance on technology affects our cognitive abilities in this blog article. I’m hoping it will serve as a wake-up call for individuals who have turned even the most basic mental functions up to technology.
1- Digital Amnesia and Memory Decline
Information that can be rapidly obtained or recovered online is referred to as having “digital amnesia.”
Before the invention of mobile phones, for instance, people had to memorize the phone numbers of the people they usually phoned.
Today, however, there is little obligation on us to do so due to the widespread use of cell phones. In other words, because of the accessibility of digital technologies, we employ our memories less frequently than previously.
The downside of this excessive dependence on technology is that it has a price. According to a Kaspersky Lab study, those who rely too heavily on technology for information storage have poorer levels of memory capacity.
However, it shouldn’t come as a surprise because, like a muscle, our brain becomes feeble if it isn’t exercised.
In Harvard researchers also looked into the impact of Google on memory. The findings of this study demonstrate that we quickly forget the knowledge that can be found with a short Google search.
